REFEREEING

WITH DIAMOND VALLEY ROLLER DERBY CLUB

ROLLER DERBY BASICS

Flat track roller derby is an old sport revived for new generations. Each team sends five skaters out on track (four blockers and one jammer, who is the scorer) where players get to use their bodies to stop the opposing jammer from passing. Players can't punch, head-butt or kick, but they can use their shoulders, hips and torsos to knock their opponents down.

AND THAT'S WHERE REFEREES COME IN!
For a game to run smoothly, there needs to be no less than 3 skating referees and no more than seven referees total. The positions are Head Referee (HR), Two Jammer Referees (JR), Inside Pack Referee (IPR) & three Outside pack Referees (OPRs)

Players and Referees wear a lot of protective gear, including wrist guards, elbow pads, knee pads, helmets and optional mouth guards.
